Volcanoes

Surrounded by impressive volcanoes and many more in the region, La Antigua can be an "explosive" place to live. The more adventurous traveler got offered superb hiking opportunities to the volcanic peaks of Agua, Acatenango, Fuego and Pacaya. All of the "fab four" are easy to reach from La Antigua and let you experience an unforgettable one or two-day hike.

Volcán Acatenango

Acatenango

Volcán Acatenango is the tallest of the volcanoes surrounding La Antigua and the third tallest in Guatemala. The volcano has two peaks, “Pico Mayor” which is the higher peak (3,975 meters / 13,041 ft) and “Yepocapa” the first peak (3,880m / 12,730 ft) also known as “Tres Hermanas”. Acatenango is connected with its twin volcano to the south, Volcán de Fuego, by a passage called “La Horqueta”.

Volcán de Fuego

Fuego

Volcán de Fuego, meaning Volcano of Fire, is one of Central America’s most active volcanoes. Fuego, with an altitude of 3,763 meters (12,350 feet), and its twin brother to the North Acatenango are overlooking the colonial town of Antigua. The Cakchiquel people call the volcano “Chi Gag”, which translates to “where the fire is”.

Volcán de Agua

Agua1

Volcán de Agua is located just about a few kilometers South from La Antigua, Guatemala, and is after Pacaya one of the easiest volcanoes to climb. The volcano that rises to an altitude of 3,760 meters (12,336 ft.) has been inactive since the mid 16th century. Agua visible from any part of the city of Antigua dominates the local landscape with its symmetrical cone and coffee growing on its lower slopes.

Volcán Pacaya

pacaya

Volcán Pacaya is located about 30 kilometres south of Guatemala City, and is easily accessible from Antigua Guatemala.  Its exact location is in a little town called Amatitlan which is about 30 minutes driving time from either of these two main cities.  It is situated right next to the Amatitlan Lake and it is a popular tourist attraction.
